Judge's Comments:Steve Chipman and the Birchwood Auto Group really distinguished themselves in this category. Their broad-based strategic planning program is exceptionally innovative. Their internal training programs and their unique internship program with the Asper School of Business is unique and valuable. Especially impressive is their very innovative growth of the IT Function in the business (and beyond). And they have really set themselves apart by their creation of Winnipeg’s first AutoMall concept. Among other indications of success, this has resulted in being the first automotive company to be one of the Financial Posts "50 Best Managed Companies" in Canada, numerous accolades for the dealership, as well as individual awards for team members. |

Manitoba auto-industry leader Steve Chipman won one of three annual awards by the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association. Chipman is the Laureate Award winner in CADA’s Business Innovation Category.
Manitoba Motor Dealers Association president John Carey presented Chipman with his award at the MMDA gala banquet held during the association’s 2010 convention last week.
The Laureate Program was launched in 2006 and recognizes dealer excellence in three categories- Ambassador, Innovator and Retailer. Five dealerships from across Canada are nominees in each category.
There were a total of six Manitoba nominees this year Carey noted.
The Business Innovation Category he noted, recognizes initiatives that significantly enhance performance or broaden the scope of business. Chipman, president of the Birchwood Automotive Group, established the Pointe West Auto Park (on Portage just past the Perimeter Highway) whose tenants currently include six Birchwood dealerships, the groups head office and Pointe West Collision Centre and Winnipeg Chrysler.
Chipman credited the Laureate Award to his team.
“The innovation Award can only apply to auto groups,” he said. “You need to have an organization to implement new ideas. And we have to be innovative because there are so many good dealers in Manitoba that are constantly presenting us with a competitive challenge.
